How to Improve Your Posture at Work

Improving Your Posture

Improving your posture at work can make a big difference in your overall health, and the right office furniture can make all the difference.

How much do you think about the quality of your posture at work? It’s more than just a matter of comfort, but having correct posture goes a long way toward increasing your overall health and wellness. If you find yourself slouching at work or dealing with consistent back aches, there are ways you can improve your posture at work.

Alignment

The first tip for improving your posture is trying to keep your ears in line with your shoulders. It may feel odd and uncomfortable at first, but once you get used to this simple adjustment, you’ll immediately feel the benefits in your overall posture. It also helps keep you from leaning too far forward or back while sitting at your desk.

Small Exercises

Using one of your breaks to do some small exercises in the office. Use a wall to help with balance as you slowly raise your arms to a 90-degree angle and lower them back down at each side. With your legs spread apart, do this at least 15 times. It sounds simple, but the movement will help you feel better during the day. You could also try shoulder shrugs to loosen up the muscles in your upper back and shoulders.

Plant Your Feet

Many professionals sit with their legs crossed under their desks. However, the proper way to sit for the best posture is with both feet planted flat on the floor. You can also try propping your feet up on something like a thick book or small step stool.

Adjust Your Chair

Most office furniture comes with adjustable settings. Use those to ensure that the position of your chair and desk is optimal for your body and height. You shouldn’t have to learn to far forward to reach your keyboard, and your elbows should rest in a relaxed position at both sides. You can also add a lumbar support pillow to your chair for help with supporting your spine as you sit. The pillow will force your body into the correct position every time you sit at your desk.
