Cubism: Are Cubicles that Bad?

cubicle

Cubicles have gotten a bad rap recently, but are they all that bad?

While cubicles have a bad reputation, today we are going to look into the ins and outs of them. Are they truly better or worse for productivity and employee satisfaction than more open architectural and interior design plans? What are the pros and cons of office spaces or cubicles? Read on to find out.

Cubicles Improve Colleague Relations

While offices provide privacy, they also separate colleagues from each other physically and emotionally. When you work in a close space with another person, you are more likely to know them and understand their role in the workplace. Cubicles help employees have a more holistic view of their role and other employees’ roles.

Cubicles Create Opportunities

When you are alone in your own office, you are exposed to a very narrow range of work and opportunities, especially if you have a very specialized role within the company. When all of the employees with their various roles, skill sets, and varied expertise are thrown into the mix, people who may not have even met in a more separate environment have the opportunity to collaborate and learn from each other.

Cubicles Can Increase Productivity

In a private office you know that no one can see what you’re doing. However, in a cubicle setting, the knowledge that anyone could be seeing what you’re doing at any time, can make people less likely to go on Facebook or YouTube and more likely to remain focused on the task at hand, since nobody wants to gain a reputation as the office slacker.

Cubicles Can Be Creative Conversation Starters

While an office is generally private and shut away, anyone who walks by a cubicle can see what’s there. Many people utilize their cubicles as canvases for artistic expression, to show what they do outside of work and what they care about. These make for excellent conversation starters, which lead to positive working relationships and opportunities.
