4 Avoidable Home Office Mistakes

Avoidable Home Office Mistakes Mark Downs

This comfortable office chair from Opus would help the home office experience.

Do you have a home office because you own a home business, or are you working from home until it’s safe for offices to open again? If that is the case, it’s still essential to keep office design tactics at the forefront. Even though you’re at home, you should have ergonomic office furniture and a workspace that’s conducive to productivity. The level of effort that you put into your home decor should apply to your home office. Today we’ll go over four avoidable home office mistakes.

Mistake #1: Being Lackadaisical About Your Home Office Lighting

You may not consider this often, but lighting impacts the ambiance of a room significantly. This factor is especially true of a place where you need to be productive. Harsh, artificial lighting can cause headaches, while dimly lit rooms can make it challenging to stay alert. Natural light is always ideal, along with desk lamps and wall sconces. The point is to have layered lighting that serves multiple purposes.

Mistake #2: Sitting in the Wrong Office Chair

This mistake plagues many employees at the office. So, it makes sense not to bring the same mistake home. While you still need to be productive, your home should be your oasis. Your house should be undeniably comfortable. Why subject yourself to sitting in an uncomfortable home office chair? However, there does have to be a balance. The office chair that you pick should be so comfortable that it doesn’t cause back pain but also allows you to sit upright, so you’re not dozing off when you need to be working.

Mistake #3: Not Strategically Setting up the Background of Your Home Office

Office meetings have a new meaning. Video conferences are becoming the new norm. With that in mind, make sure that your clients or coworkers are looking at an appropriate background when you Zoom or Skype call. For your benefit as well, it may help to put up attractive artwork on your wall, or strategically design your home office so that it looks neat, professional, and won’t cause snickers.

Mistake #4: Designing an Uninspiring Home Office

Let us piggyback off of the idea of professional-looking home office spaces. While you do want your work environment to exude professionalism, you also want it to inspire you. Throwing in pops of color, and meaningful pictures are more than okay. Once again, having a balance is necessary. A functional but visually-interesting work environment is always ideal.
