How to Reduce Back Pain in an Office Chair

Improving Your Posture

Reducing back pain while in the office is easier than you think.

If you are like the millions of Americans today, you probably work in an office. Sure, you love your job, but sometimes sitting at a desk can be a pain. Whether you realize it or not, sitting down for the majority of the day can really do some damage in the long run. Sitting in an office chair for an extended period of time can worsen a current back problem or even cause a new one to develop. Sitting still increases stress in your back, shoulders, arms, and legs. It can even add pressure on the back muscles and spinal disks. Slouching in your chair can overstretch spinal ligaments and strain your disks. It is of serious importance to properly arrange your office chair so that you are sitting in the healthiest way possible during the work day. This way, you will lessen your back pain and stay healthy for years to come.

Setting Up  Your Office Chair

If you can, it is best to invest in an ergonomic office chair for your workplace. You must also adjust the chair to your specific proportions so it can serve you in the best way possible. Establish the height of your desk or workstation. Once your workstation has been situated, adjust the office chair. Begin by sitting as close to your desk as possible, but so you are still comfortable. Rest your hands on your desk and if your elbows are not at a 90 degree angle, adjust your chair so that they are.

Next, check that you can slide your fingers under your thigh at the front of your chair. If you cannot, consider using a footrest. If you are too tall and there is a lot of space between your thighs and the chair, then raise the desk so you can raise the height of your chair accordingly.

Be Active

It is paramount that you get up and around during the work day as much as possible. Remember to stand up, stretch, and walk around for at least one minute every half hour. Try to take at least one twenty minute walk a day to keep the blood circulating. Moving and stretching will help to keep your muscles active and promote a feeling of comfort, relaxation, and most importantly, productivity.
